Nationwide petrol strike called off

Nationwide petrol strike called off

People Against Petrol and Paraffin Price Increases (Pappi) has called off its planned nationwide protest against the rising price of fuel.

The protest was set to take place on Friday at all major service stations.

Pappi spokesperson, Visvin Reddy, says instead they will be meeting with the presidency on Thursday to discuss the regulation of the fuel price by government.

"Even if a petrol company wants to lower its prices they won't be able to because fuel prices are determined by government. The solution to the fuel prices lies with government," Reddi says.

Reddy says it will be negotiating in bad faith, should they continue with the strike.

"We have stated that protest action is the last resort and as responsible leaders we will explore every other avenue to seek solutions to the high fuel prices. We will not call a protest of the magnitude we talk about just for the sake of calling one.”

He says even though hard-pressed consumers want to voice their anger at the series of price hikes, the group believes negotiations rather that protests is the best course of action.
