NCC recalls 518 Toyotas over instrument display fault
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced the recall of more than 500 Toyotas sold through the manufacturer’s dealer network across South Africa.
The recall affects selected Toyota RAV4 PHEV, Corolla Cross, Corolla Hatchback, Crown and GR Corolla models.
According to the NCC, the affected vehicles have a programming issue involving the combination meter, which displays important information such as warning lights, gauges and messages on the vehicle’s 12.3-inch instrument display.
The affected vehicles were manufactured between July 2022 and July 2024.
The NCC said the programming fault may result in unnecessary data being repeatedly written to the meter’s memory device. This could cause the memory device to deteriorate prematurely and, in some cases, prevent the instrument monitor from displaying information when the vehicle is started.
The commission spokesperson, Phetho Ntaba, warns that the fault could have serious safety implications.
“If this occurs, the monitor may fail to display information when the vehicle is started. Should certain vehicle malfunctions occur while the monitor is not functioning, the driver may fail to notice the relevant warning indicators if they do not see the notification displayed on the centre multimedia screen.
“Depending on the malfunction, continued driving may increase the risk of an accident.”
Affected Toyota owners are being urged to take their vehicles to their nearest Toyota dealership, where the combination meter assembly will be reprogrammed.
The repairs will be carried out at no cost to consumers.
