NCC recalls Chrysler 300C and Audi A3 over faulty airbags
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued a safety recall alert for certain Chrysler 300C and Audi A3 models following reports of defective Takata airbags.
Stellantis South Africa (Pty) Ltd has announced the recall of 1,213 Chrysler 300C vehicles manufactured between 2006 and 2010 and distributed nationwide.
The recall follows concerns that the driver airbag inflator may rupture during deployment, potentially sending metal fragments toward occupants and causing serious injury.
Meanwhile, Audi South Africa, a division of Volkswagen of South Africa, confirmed a recall of Audi A3 vehicles due to faulty Takata gas generators in the front driver airbag.
"The propellant in the gas generator may deteriorate due to moisture ingress, which can restrict airbag function," said NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba.
"In the event of deployment, the gas generator housing may burst, dislodging metal fragments that could harm occupants. The affected vehicles are grey imports and were not directly imported by Audi South Africa."
The NCC has urged owners of the affected vehicles to visit their nearest authorised dealership as soon as possible.
All repairs will be carried out free of charge.
