On Wednesday the Communications Workers Union (CWU) revealed Telkom's plans to shed over 3000 jobs by March.

The union claims to have had a meeting with Telkom where they indicated that retrenchments are on the cards as a result of financial difficulties.

The minister’s spokesperson Nthabeleng Mokitimi-Dlamini says Ndabeni-Abrahams is concerned over the reports and will meet with the telecoms company as soon as possible.

"Ms Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams has noted with concern the latest reports on the planned Telkom retrenchments.

"The minister has therefore scheduled an urgent meeting with Telkom, to be fully briefed on the matter."

The South African government holds a 39% stake in the company.

Telkom is the latest in a string of several large organisations considering job cuts as the country battles high unemployment rates and tough economic conditions.
