Nehawu calls for Mchunu to step down
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) wants the Minister of Public Service and Administration Senzo Mchunu to step down.
This comes after the Mchunu called on South Africans to send suggestions on how to resolve the deadlocked wage talks between public servants and government.
Nehawu spokesperson Khaya Xaba says if the minister is cannot do his job he needs to step aside.
"We cannot have a minister who is supposed to undertake his duties but relegates them to the public.
"However, the public was not there when they [government] signed the agreement in 2018," says Xaba.
Currently, workers are demanding a consumer price inflation increase plus 4%.
Unions are also demanding a risk allowance of 12%, because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Government is offering a 0% increase due to what it calls financial constraints.
Some of the civil servants include frontline healthcare workers who have been battling against coronavirus for more than a year.
Nehawu warns that these workers are gearing up for a mass strike should the negotiations deadlock again.
