According to the union, the department tabled an offer that will be communicated to their members on Thursday.

"As the national union, we noted the employer's response and agreed on a mandating process utilising the entire day of Thursday March 23, 2017 to consult our members on the picket lines," the union says.

Nehawu spokesperson, Khaya Xaba adds that both parties will reconvene on Friday to report on their mandates and consultation processes with a view of concluding a collective agreement.

"It all depends on the response we get from our members and I can't divulge the details of the offer just yet," Xaba says.

The union started striking last month demanding better wages as well as improved working conditions for social workers.
