Nehawu shuts down Unisa
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
Members of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) have embarked on a nationwide strike at all University of South Africa (Unisa) campuses.
Nehawu claims that some buildings are not compliant with occupational health and safety standards and therefore not a conducive environment for employees.
Unisa spokesperson Martin Ramotshela says management is in talks with the union’s leadership of Nehawu in an attempt to find a solution.

He says exams - which are currently underway - have not been affected and striking workers have allowed students to enter premises.
"We engaged with them with aq delegation led by the vice-chancellor and we left them with a proposal that they said they will take caucus and revert back to us."
Nehawu branch chairperson Lunathi Hontoti says both parties have been negotiating in good faith and there will hopefully be a resolution soon.
"We are awaiting a detailed plan from the management that will illustrate to us that indeed management is committed to the OHS challenges that are facing the institution.
"We are not far from each other and it is safe to say that we are about to reach an agreement."
