Nelson Mandela Foundation: Bizos was a servant of the people
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The Nelson Mandela Foundation has described renowned human rights lawyer George Bizos as a servant to the people until the very end.
Bizos died at the age of 92 on Wednesday.
The foundation’s CEO Sello Hatang says Bizos gave his life to the fight for justice.
"He was not just a friend to Madiba but he was also a friend of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
"A servant to the end, someone who gave everything he could for justice.
"And we believe that in his honour, each one of us must do everything possible to try and live up the values they held dear. Values such as solidarity with the poor and ensuring that you fight against inequality.”
Bizos was part of the legal team at the Treason and Rivonia trials in 1956 and 1964 respectively.
He defended the rights of freedom fighters such as the late Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo and Walter Sisulu.
