According to the Washington Post, in a book to be published this week, Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen alleges that Trump described Mandela as a poor leader.

The newspaper says Cohen wrote that following Mandela's death in 2013, Trump said: "Mandela f***ed the whole country up. Now it's a s***hole. F*** Mandela. He was no leader."

On Tuesday the ANC hit back, saying Mandela stands in stark contrast to the US president.

"All freedom-loving people of the world are appalled by these insults which come from a person who, himself, is not a model of competent leadership,” said spokesperson Pule Mabe.

"Trump is a divisive, misogynistic and disrespectful person ever to occupy the office of the president. The icon of our struggle, President Nelson Mandela stands in stark contrast to Trump."

The governing party says it believes Mandela would have reached out to Trump to educate him on the challenges facing developing countries.

"The mark of a true leader is not how many enemies you create but how many friendships you cultivate even where strong differences of opinion exist."
