New Covid-19 cases continue to climb in KZN

KwaZulu-Natal accounts for a quarter of all new Covid-19 cases reported across South Africa on Thursday, followed by the Western Cape and Gauteng.

The latest statistics released by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) show KZN reporting 5 241 new infections in the latest 24-hour period up to Thursday evening.

 

As holiday makers flock to their destinations two days before Christmas, the Western Cape continues to report the second highest number of new cases in the country, reporting 4 597 on Thursday.

 

“The majority of new cases today are from KwaZulu-Natal (25%), followed by Western Cape (22%). Gauteng accounted for 20%; Eastern Cape accounted for 12% and Free State 7%.  North West accounted for 5%; Limpopo and  Mpumalanga each accounted for 4% and Northern Cape accounted for 2% of today’s new case,” reads the statement by the NICD.

 

The proportion of new cases tested on Thursday is lower than the previous day and according to the NICD, the 7-day average of 29.6% is also lower than the previous day (29.8%).

There were a further 75 Covid-19 related deaths, bringing the total fatalities to 90 662.

 

An increase of 411 hospital admissions has been recorded in the latest 24-hour cycle, with 9 202 people currently receiving treatment in public and private healthcare facilities.
