New Ekurhuleni speaker promises stability in troubled metro

A new political chapter has begun in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality after John Senona was elected as the new council speaker.

John Senona
X: City of Ekurhuleni

Senona, representing the African Transformation Movement, secured the position after defeating Nkululeko Dunga of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) on Thursday.

He received 93 votes from more than 210 councillors who were present during the council sitting.

Senona’s election comes amid a broader political restructuring within the municipality led by the city’s mayor, Nkosindiphile Xhakaza of the African National Congress.

The leadership changes form part of efforts to stabilise governance in the metro after a period of political uncertainty and shifting alliances within the council.

The EFF indicated that they would not work with the African National Congress following the reshuffle.

Following his election, Senona pledged himself to restore stability and rebuild confidence in the council.

“I just want to assure the residents of Ekhuruleni that from now on, going forward, there will be a stability in this council. We know that we have been getting bad coverage about the city, but all is a thing of the past now."

Senona emphasised that addressing residents’ concerns will be a key priority under his leadership.

He acknowledged that many petitions have been submitted by community members and committed to ensuring that these matters are handled with urgency.

As the council moves forward under its newly reshaped leadership, all eyes will be on whether the promised stability can be achieved amid ongoing political dynamics within one of Gauteng’s largest metropolitan municipalities.
