No formal process underway towards Kruger National Park name change - SANParks
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
SANParks spokesperson JP Louw clarified that no formal process is currently underway, stressing that name changes of national parks are governed by national legislation, not provincial motions.
"As far as we know, there is no formal process underway currently to look into the name change of Kruger National Park."
He further explained that the EFF’s motion in the Mpumalanga provincial legislature, though publicised, does not constitute a binding legal procedure.
"Our understanding is that this doesn't really constitute any formal process to what's name changing. If it were so, sometime in the future, we would be guided by the law about how we would engage with such a process
Louw underlined that SANParks operates under careful oversight to ensure public engagement, safety, and legal compliance.
"If sometime in the future there would be such an initiative, some parts would, of course, be guided by the law about how we would engage with such a process."
He stressed that, ultimately, decisions affecting national parks fall under the jurisdiction of the national government and relevant ministers, not individual provinces.
SANParks continues to monitor the discussion closely and urges political parties and the public to respect legal and procedural protocols before pursuing any changes.
Louw emphasised that preserving the park’s international reputation and ensuring consistent visitor experiences are critical priorities.
