Eskom said there were no blackouts on Friday morning but warned that the electricity system was currently “constrained but stable”.

“The power system is currently constrained but stable, and this will enable Eskom to perform maintenance without load shedding,” the power utility said in a statement.

However, Eskom said the power system was expected to remain constrained throughout the day on Friday, especially during the evening peak period (5pm – 9pm) because of increased electricity demand and power station unit being on maintenance.

The utility urged electricity users to consider energy efficient ways of keeping warm, as the country was experiencing cold weather conditions.

“In winter the electricity demand peaks in the morning and evening as more electricity is used during these times. We appeal to all our customers to continue to reduce their electricity usage throughout the day but to be aware of the need to save more during the peak periods from 06:00 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 21:00.”

Eskom implemented stage 2 loadshedding from 5pm until 10pm on Thursday because of “increased electricity demand and a shortage of generation capacity due to power station units being on maintenance”. -ANA
