NPA asks for 6 weeks to consider Mkhwebane’s perjury charges

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has made a brief appearance in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court
Mkhwebane appeared in court on Wednesday.
She is facing two counts of perjury after she allegedly lied under oath in 2017.
The National Prosecuting authority asked for a six-week postponement of the matter.
This is to give the National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi enough time to consider submissions made by Mkhwebane to have the charges withdrawn.
The perjury charges were laid against Mkhwebane by non-profit organisation Accountability Now in August 2019.
She is accused of lying under oath when she deposed to an answering affidavit under oath in a Gauteng High Court review application.
Mkhwebane’s lawyer, Advocate Dali Mpofu, described the charges as frivolous.
They initially made representations to the Director of Public Prosecutions in the North Gauteng Division, Advocate Sibongile Mzinyathi.
Mzinyathi withdrew one charge.
Mpofu confirmed on Wednesday that the submissions to Batohi were made in August but they have not received any feedback.
The matter will be back to court on December 2.
The charges will either all be withdrawn or a trial date will be set.
