The money is believed to be the proceeds of crime linked to the state capture-related asbestos corruption case.

The assets include six immovable properties and a Mercedes-Benz vehicle purchased in cash for R2 million.

The preservation order was granted on 13 March 2025, and the respondents, including the late Ignatius Mpambani, his wife and their associated entities.

Those affected have 14 days to oppose or accept the order, while the court has 90 days to confirm the preservation.

"These assets are part of a broader strategy by the NPA to eliminate the financial incentive behind corrupt activities,” said NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga.

"We presented compelling evidence to the court proving these were criminal proceeds."

He was speaking to the SABC News.

The R32 million forms part of a broader R300 million worth of frozen assets linked to the high-profile asbestos corruption case.

In court proceedings related to the case, the presiding judge adopted a cautious approach, limiting cross-examination of witnesses strictly to the issue of jurisdiction.

This led to objections from the NPA when Ace Magashule, an accused who had not raised any jurisdictional challenge, attempted to question a witness on matters outside his defence.

"The judge was clear that cross-examination must stay relevant to the issue at hand. Magashule

was never part of any extradition process; that only related to Ms. Moroadi Cholota,” said Mhaga.

It comes amid concerns that the trial could be prolonged due to the number of accused persons.

"We’re hoping the allocated time is sufficient to address all charges and present our witnesses," Mhaga added.
