NPA: Lindela security guards off the hook, for now
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng has struck the case against seven security officials based at the Lindela repatriation centre off the roll pending further investigations.
The group is implicated in the escape of 37 foreign nationals who were awaiting deportation earlier this month.
Shortly after the incident, Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi revealed his suspicions that the breakout had been an “inside job”.
The group was expected to appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after they handed themselves over to police last week.
Regional NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane says: “The case docket against seven security officials based at the Lindela repatriation centre was not placed on the roll at the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court due to insufficient evidence.”
She adds: “The docket has been referred back to SAPS, with instructions of investigations that must be conducted. Once those investigations are concluded, the docket will be brought back to the NPA for a decision.”
