NTA denies plans for imminent national shutdown

Rumours of a national taxi shutdown are doing the rounds as the sector battles to keep its head above water amid the skyrocketing fuel price.
The reports have forced both the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) and the South African National Taxi Alliance (NTA) to issue statement denying plans for an imminent shutdown.
The NTA’s Theo Malele says they are still in discussion with government on ways to ease the burden on the taxi industry.
“The National Taxi Alliance has not yet organised or called for a national shutdown in protest against the unprecedented, poverty enabling fuel hikes.
”We have every intention to negotiate with government in good faith, however should government fail to respond to our demands as they always do; we will be left without a chance but to call for a shut down in conjunction with likeminded business and civil society.”
There have also been reports that the two taxi associations are lobbying trade union federations such as Cosatu to join forces for a national shutdown.
