NTA urges ‘sober leadership’ in wake of Soweto e-hailing killing
Updated | By Selaki Ledwaba
The National Taxi Alliance says it cannot confirm whether an e-hailing driver was killed by one of their members in Soweto on Wednesday evening.
The e-hailing driver was shot and killed, and the car was set alight, by four unknown men outside Maponya Mall in Pimville.
It is claimed that the perpetrators were taxi drivers.
The National Taxi Alliance’s Theo Malele said the public should allow the police to conclude their investigations instead of speculating.
“We are not sure exactly as to who did this; it is just speculation. There is footage, as we are told. So let the footage tell us precisely what has happened,” said Malele.
Malele said the Gauteng Transport MEC established a crisis committee to discuss challenges faced by the e-hailing sector and the taxi industry.
However, the fragmentation in the e-hailing leadership means it has not been able to resolve tensions between taxi drivers and the e-hailing sector.
“We call for sober leadership. There is a fragmentation in the e-hailing leadership, and they must find themselves so that we can resolve the challenges that we are all facing. We must find solutions that do not lead us into fighting. We must promote dialogue.”
