NUM instigating violent attacks at Sibanye, claims Amcu
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) president Joseph Mathunjwa has accused the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) of instigating the violent attacks against its striking members at Sibanye-Stillwater.
Mathunjwa’s claims, made at a media briefing in Johannesburg on Wednesday, comes amid video footage shared by the union - depicting a group of people he alleges are NUM members.
Amcu says the video is proof that NUM members are behind the attacks.

“This is NUM who is intimidating, who are prepared to kill our members. The same clarion call that you call in the media for arrest for those who are perpetrating violence, start with your former union members,” Mathunjwa said.

Mathunjwa says he has asked Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe to intervene.
“This evidence has been presented to the Department of Mineral Resources through whatsapp. I spoke to minister Gwede Mantashe, he was trying to dismiss everything but I put to him that it’s not the first time I request his intervention.”
Nine workers have died since workers downed tools at Sibanye-Stillwater in November last year.
The union is demanding a R1000 wage increase and a R12 500 monthly wage.
Mathunjwa said it is still unclear when AMCU members will return to work.
