Numsa and Goodyear reach settlement agreement
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and Goodyear have settled after the tyre company announced the closure of its Kariega Plant in the Eastern Cape.
Goodyear South Africa announced in June that it intends to discontinue its manufacturing operations in South Africa.
The plant closure affects some 900 employees, a further setback in a province where the unemployment rate is already 41.9%.
On Monday, Numsa Secretary General Irvin Jim briefed the media on the settlement agreement.
He said the union substantially improved the severance packages offered to affected workers.
"The more pertinent improvements attained were increasing severance pay from two weeks’ remuneration per completed year of service to four weeks’ remuneration, in addition to Goodyear SA also paying each worker a lump sum of R100,000,” said Jim.
"Accordingly, a settlement agreement was concluded with GYSA during the evening of Friday, 15 August 2025, incorporating the agreed package."
