Numsa: Fire Gordhan, remove Mabuza at Eskom
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has called for the axing of Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan and for Jabu Mabuza to be removed from Eskom.
The union says it is shocked Gordhan has appointed Mabuza as both board chairperson and acting group CEO the embattled state entity.
Mabuza was appointed in an interim capacity after Phakamani Hadebe left Eskom at the end of July.
Numsa’s spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says the decision by the minister is alarming considering the poor performance by the management team in that last financial year when Eskom reported a loss of R20,7 billion.
“This means that Jabu Mabuza, together with the entire board and senior executive management, must be removed.”
Hlubi-Majola says Mabuza is conflicted to serve at Eskom, as he told the commission of inquiry into state capture that his family members were doing business with Eskom.
She add Gordhan should be fired as he is at the centre of Eskom’s failure.
“He approved the cost overruns at Medupi and Kusile, which has contributed to the staggering level of debt. He was finance minister when the construction cost where ballooning and he approved the payments.”
