Numsa to picket at RMI offices over wage agreement
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) will hold a national picket at offices of the Retail Motor Industry (RMI) in Mpumalanga, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape on Tuesday.
RMI represents approximately 40% of the motor industry.
NUMSA National Spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says they demand that RMI urgently ratify the wage agreement which was signed by them in January 2019.
"The agreement has not been ratified due to the RMI’s deliberate attempts to frustrate the operations of the Motor Industry Bargaining Council (MIBCO).
We demand the urgent ratification of the settlement agreement so that it can be sent to the Department of Employment and Labour for it to be gazetted," says Hlubi-Majola.
She says the delay in the ratification of the agreement means that employees who fall under motor have not yet received the 8% increase which was secured in the last round of wage talks.
"Workers have suffered irreparable losses because of the shenanigans of the RMI. This employer association has shown utter disregard and disdain for workers and their families. Even in the face of a global pandemic, this employer has shown an absolute callousness for the value of human life," adds Hlubi-Majola.
