Numsa welcomes Putco's withdrawal of retrenchment notices as a victory

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has welcomed the withdrawal of the retrenchment process by public passenger transport company Putco.
The announcement was made by the bus management on Monday during a meeting with the union.
Putco was set to retrench 214 workers this year due to financial constraints caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Numsa spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says the retrenchment process was unnecessary.
"This is a victory for workers and their families,” says Hlubi-Majola.
“We made submissions during the section 189-A consultation to oppose retrenchments because we felt the job cuts were unnecessary. There is ample evidence that Putco can save millions in revenue, and retain jobs simply by stopping mismanagement and wastage."

Hlubi-Majola says the company has assured workers it will reinstate full shifts for employees.
"Job rotation is a burning issue for our members because it meant they worked reduced hours, and this meant they earned less. We are pleased that going forward management has committed to reinstating full hours and full shifts."
