National police spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo says a group of armed suspects attacked a cash-in-transit vehicle between Mahikeng and Lichtenberg.

“The suspects used explosives to gain access to the cash, but before actually removing the cash from the CIT vehicle, members from the Hawks and the National Intervention Unit responded.

“The suspects fled in both vehicles without taking any money. A high-speed chase ensued towards the Mafikeng CBD,” says Naidoo.

Naidoo says police lost track of the suspects in one of the vehicles, but the chase for the other group continued.

A shootout then ensued between the suspects and the police in Mahikeng.

“The police officer was shot in the head and died. Three other civilians were also wounded, and they remain in hospital,” says Naidoo.

No arrests were made.
