A court in North West court has sentenced an illegal miner to 18 years in prison for murder.
Tjabaka Ramarou was sentenced by the Stilfontein Magistrate's Court on Wednesday following his conviction on charges of murder and attempted murder.
Ramarou shot and killed a fellow illegal miner and wounded another in April 2020.
Provincial police spokesperson Amanda Funani says Ramarou confronted the two at a Stilfontein mine.
“He found other illegal miners busy cleaning products that they sourced from underground.
“Ramarou and his companion were armed with firearms, ordered two other zama-zamas to leave their products. When the two victims failed to obey their instruction.

Shortly after the incident, he and his accomplice fled to Lesotho.
"The long arm of the law caught up with Ramarou seven months later after information was received that he was back in the country. He was denied bail and has been in custody since his arrest," adds Funani.
