The North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) said the incident occurred along the R49 between Lichtenburg and Zeerust.

The lion was caught on camera by another motorist breaking free while being transported from the Free State to Nietverdiend in the Ramotshere Moiloa area.

DEDECT spokesperson Jeremiah Matebesi said there was no longer any threat to the public.

"We can confirm that the lion has been recaptured and poses no danger to the community or road users. Our inspectors and local law enforcement acted swiftly to contain the situation," said Matebesi.

However, the Department has since launched a formal investigation to determine whether the transporter complied with the conditions of the wildlife transport permit.

"Preliminary findings suggest there may have been an infringement of the transport permit conditions. We will assess full compliance with national standards that regulate the movement and welfare of carnivores."

According to DEDECT, investigators will probe adherence to the South African National Standards (SANS 1884-3), which outline strict requirements for cage design, vehicle safety, and the handling of dangerous animals during transport.

The Department will also scrutinize Condition 5 of the permit, which requires holders to maintain public liability insurance and accept full accountability for any damage caused by escaped wildlife.

"If we find negligence or non-compliance, severe action will be taken against the permit holder," Matebesi warned.

Authorities have called on game farmers and wildlife transporters to ensure all relevant permits are obtained before moving animals and to strictly follow safety procedures while transporting wildlife.

"This incident is a reminder of the serious responsibility that comes with wildlife transport, safety, compliance, and animal welfare must come first at all times."

The Department plans to release further updates once the investigation has concluded.
