An investigation has been launch into the circumstances that led to the
drowning of a grade 11 pupil from Michael Modisakeng Secondary School in North
West.
The 21-year-old drowned while attending a life skills peer education seminar for boys near Rustenburg on Saturday.
Spokesperson for the Department of Education in North West Elias Malindi says the pupil disappeared without anyone noticing.
“Hotel guests who were close to the swimming pool reported to the authorities that a learner jumped inside the swimming pool.
“The departmental officials rushed and tried to save his life by giving him a cardiopulmonary resuscitation whilst waiting for the ambulance and his family.
“Upon the arrival of the emergency service unit the learner was declared dead at the scene.”
North West Education MEC Mmaphefo Matsemela says support will be provided to the family.
"On behalf of the department I wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the entire school community of Michael Modisakeng Secondary School. This unfortunate incident came unexpectedly.
“The other learners were provided with a group psycho-social support on Sunday before they returned home.”
