Ex-Education officials to be sentenced for R3.8m ghost employee scheme
The Gauteng Department of Education has welcomed the conviction of two former employees involved in a R3.8 million ghost employee scheme.
The two, who worked at the Human Resources Unit of the Gauteng West District Office, were arrested in 2016 on charges of fraud, forgery, and theft.
They are due to be sentenced in the Johannesburg Commercial Crimes Court sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court on Wednesday and Thursday.
The department says an internal investigation also implicated five additional employees, all of whom were dismissed following an internal disciplinary process.
“This case demonstrates our commitment to protecting public funds and upholding integrity. We initiated the investigation, took decisive disciplinary action and ensured justice was served,” said Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane.
"It should also serve as a deterrent for anyone considering criminal activity in our sector.”
