A 22-year-old suspect has been arrested in Senwabarwana, Limpopo, for allegedly possessing and dealing in illicit cigarettes.
The arrest was carried out on Monday after members of the Provincial Flying Squad, Relief B, acted on intelligence about an individual believed to be hiding at a location suspected of being used to store illegal cigarettes.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said that when officers arrived at the scene, a person of interest fled upon noticing the police presence.
During a search of the area, officers found an Ethiopian national hiding inside a white Mahindra bakkie.
A search of the vehicle uncovered illicit cigarettes, believed to be the Remington Gold brand, with an estimated street value of about R40 000.
"The suspect was immediately placed under arrest for possession and dealing in illicit cigarettes. The illicit cigarettes and the motor vehicle were seized," he said.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Senwabarwana Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
