The Democratic Alliance and ActionSA have both written to the South African Revenue Service and the Reserve Bank in an effort to obtain answers.

The theft of a large amount of cash from the president came to light after former spy boss Arthur Fraser laid a criminal complaint against Ramaphosa.

He is accusing the president of kidnapping and bribing robbers who stole more than $4 million from one of his properties in Limpopo.

Ramaphosa told the media at the ANC’s Limpopo provincial congress in Polokwane on Sunday that he is willing to cooperate with any investigation.

But DA leader John Steenhuisen says there are many unanswered questions about the handling of the robbery and the failure to report it to the police.

“South Africans need to know whether the president has no faith in SAPS, or whether there were other reasons for withholding this crime from the police. South Africans also need to know whether the president paid suspects and/or witnesses for their silence, whether he had them kidnapped and interrogated and whether he used his position as head of state, as well as state resources, for his own private business and his private investigation,” says Steenhuisen.

Meanwhile, ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba says he has written to the Reserve Bank and the SA Revenue Service to seek answers.

“My letters to the SARB Governor specifically pose a number of questions, key amongst which was whether any declarations or documentation had been submitted in relation to foreign currency transactions at Phala Phala and whether the SARB has any knowledge of this.

“While my letter to the SARS commissioner raises questions about SARS’ knowledge about these funds, declarations made in respect of this cash and whether tax had been paid in respect of such transactions,” says Mashaba.
