End of an era as Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls closes its doors
The Gauteng Department of Education has announced the closure of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG), describing it as the next chapter in one of South Africa’s most significant education partnerships.
Since opening its doors in 2007, the academy has supported more than 1 000 academically talented girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The academy has produced notable alumni, including actress Siphesihle Ndaba, known for her role as Mazet on the Mzansi Magic telenovela Gomora, and Dr Lindiwe Tsope, a member of the school’s first graduating class who became the first OWLAG graduate to obtain a PhD.
Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile has expressed appreciation to Oprah Winfrey for her contribution to education and her investment in empowering young South African women.
The department’s spokesperson, Onwabile Lubhelwana, said preparations were underway for the full transfer of the academy to the Gauteng Department of Education, in line with the original partnership agreement.
The transition is expected to be completed after the 2027 academic year.
The academy will continue to graduate two more senior classes before the transition, with the remaining lower-grade learners being placed at leading South African schools and their tuition fees covered by Oprah Winfrey until they complete their schooling.
The Gauteng Department of Education says the transition process will focus on ensuring an orderly handover of the academy’s assets and facilities while honouring the legacy created through the partnership.
