The Orlando station serves the Eikenhof substation which in turn feeds Rand Water, Nirvana, Nancefield, Pennyville, Eldorado Park and Soweto.

City Power says it is investigating the cause of the trip but suspects it is due to theft and vandalism.

“Orlando 88kv lines have been isolated due to a fault which caused a fire on the Soweto local feeder board in the early hours of this morning,” said City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.

“We have dispatched a team which is currently on site working on assessing the extent of the damage and work on repairing the infrastructure and replacing stolen batteries. We would like to reiterate that this is not load shedding.”

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala says they are working on contingency plans to assist affected residents.

“All areas receiving direct water supply from Rand Water will be impacted heavily by this incident. Johannesburg Water is arranging alternative water supply at strategic areas like hospitals, clinics, schools, municipal offices, police stations and shopping centres.

“Residents are urged to use water sparingly during this time as we currently do not have an expected time of completion.”
