Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The death toll in the Ormonde building collapse has risen to nine after rescue teams located and began extracting the last of the trapped construction workers on Tuesday.
Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) confirmed that two of the three missing workers had been rescued earlier, while the third was located beneath the rubble and was being extracted.
EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo said rescue operations were still underway at the site.
"Two of the three patients have been rescued, and the third has been located. Rescue teams are currently engaged in the extraction process."
The building, which was still under construction when it collapsed on Monday afternoon, has now been classified as an unlawful development by the City of Johannesburg.
Investigations into the cause of the collapse are continuing, while structural and compliance assessments are expected to be finalised in the coming days.
