Our money used to balance Joburg books, claims Samwu

The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) claims that the City of Johannesburg and Mayor Herman Mashaba are using subscription fees from its members to balance the city's books.
The union is also accusing Mashaba of halting deposits of subscription funds to the union.
The funds allegedly stand at R30 million.
"Our subscriptions are balancing the financial sheets of the City of Johannesburg. The City of Johannesburg is claiming to be in a good financial condition, which is not true. Our R30 million plus interest is sitting there in that account balancing their balance sheet," Samwu Deputy Regional Secretary Thobani Nkosi told the media at a press conference on Wednesday.
The union’s leadership has subsequently laid a charge of corruption, fraud and theft against Mashaba.
Samwu, which declared insolvency six months ago, has been struggling to pay staff salaries since August last year.
The union marched to the Joburg municipal chambers last month to deliver a memorandum of demands to the city.
One of the grievances was the R30 million which the union claims is being deliberately withheld by Mashaba.
