OUTA calls for moratorium on municipal salary increases
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) has called for the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) to place a moratorium on municipal salary increases amid the national economic crunch.
The country’s economy has taken a knock since the start of the national Covid-19 lockdown where many businesses have been out of commission and large-scale job losses are anticipated.
On Friday, OUTA wrote to Cogta minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma asking for her intervention in the matter.
In the letter, OUTA called on all public office bearers and management to respect their citizens by reducing the cost of government on the taxpayer.

“In the wake of OUTA seeing many municipalities preparing for salary increases in their upcoming budget submissions, we find it absolutely ludicrous and out of line in this current economic meltdown,” says OUTA’s Wayne Duvenage.
“Local government carries on likes it’s business as usual and this is absurd.”
Duvenage says the government has failed to prioritise its people.
“These cost increases are obviously going to lead to increase in tariffs – property tariffs and levies and so forth,” he adds.
“We cannot afford it, we’re in an economic crisis.”
