Over 600 new Covid-19 cases, 17 deaths

South Africa has recorded its biggest one-day jump in Covid-19 infections with 663 new cases.

In a statement om Friday, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said this brought the number of confirmed cases to 8895.


The Western Cape remains the epicentre with 4497 confirmed cases, followed by Gauteng with 1851 and KwaZulu-Natal recording 1253.


"As of 7th May we had 435 patients in hospital of which 45 were in high care, 77 were in ICU and, of those, 40 were being ventilated. Our hospitalization rate remains at 5% of all COVID19 diagnosed patients," said Mkhize.


Mkhize also confirmed 17 new deaths, taking the total number of fatalities to 178.


Three additional deaths have been reported in the Eastern Cape, three in Gauteng, two in KwaZulu-Natal and - nine in the worst-hit province - the Western Cape.
