PAC in Limpopo refused to sign IEC Code of Conduct

The party's Phala Phalakatshela said that this was done to provoke the party.

"I'm not sure whether I have to sign if the logo which is on the paper is not the PAC logo," Phalakatshela said.

IEC Chairperson Glen Mashinini apologised to the party, saying it was an error on the Electoral Commission's part.

The Electoral Commission called on all political parties to sign a Code of Conduct at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The IEC's Nkaro Mateta said that there were incidents of intimidation towards independent candidates recently, and that this was a breach of the conduct.

Mateta added that about one hundred and sixteen independent candidates will contest the upcoming local government elections in Limpopo.

"So far there are two reported cases in Makhudutamaga Municipality and Vhembe District Municipality in which candidates experienced some degree of intimidation while collecting signatures in various villages." Mateta said.

Other political parties pledged to abide by the code of conduct.

Communications Minister Faith Muthambi, representing the ANC, said officials will need to act responsibly during the upcoming local government elections.

"We want to reassure you that there will be no such thing as  a no-go area in this province, " Muthambi said.

The DA's Desiree van der Walt said that people of the province deserved free and fair elections.

"The DA will in every single voting station have a well-trained party agent to look after the votes of the people of our province," she said.
