‘Parents no longer need to fake addresses for schools admissions’

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says parents no longer need to fake their home addresses to ensure their children are registered in certain schools.

The MEC’s comments came during a press briefing where he announced the delimitation of feeder zones in schools.
This means that learners will now be allowed to attend any school of their choice, within a 30km radius limit.
The previous limit was 5km.
“There must be no parent that must be criminalised and go and fake an address of an uncle so that they can be accepted in a certain school. You will see how we have broken the back bone of apartheid planning, that all our schools now belong to all communities and all communities can now access our schools,” he says.
The new feeder zones policy has formally been published in the government gazette.
Those wishing to appeal the policy have 30 days to do so, while all Public Ordinary Schools have been given 90 days to submit their new school policies.
“This means that every school policy must now be resubmitted to the department, in particular the admissions policy. All these schools must now submit to the Department HOD. The policies must come into effect in 2020,” adds Lesufi.
