MPs are to debate transformation in the country’s higher education institutions on Tuesday afternoon, Parliament said on Monday.

“The debate, which is expected to be attended by student leaders from various student structures, will be opened by the Minister of Higher Education,” Parliament said in a statement.

The debate follows two weeks of protest action by students who are demanding free tertiary education, among others.

Despite an announcement by President Jacob Zuma that there will be no university fee increases in 2016, students say this concession is not enough.

Last week, the protesting students stormed the parliamentary gates while finance minister Nhlanhla Nene was delivering his medium-term budget policy statement.
