Parliament to oppose Afriforum’s expropriation application
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
Parliament says it will oppose AfriForum's application to set aside the report of the joint constitutional review committee on amending Section 25 of the Constitution.
The committee adopted a proposal last week that the constitution should be amended to explicitly provide for the expropriation of land without compensation.
The proposal is expected to be discussed in the National Assembly and in the National Council of Provinces next week.

Parliament’s spokesperson Molotho Mothapo says the report is a culmination of months of extensive public consultations.
"Where South Africans contributed and expressed themselves with regards to land and its role in building out economy in ensuring that the injustices of the past and ensuring our new democratic constitution is enjoyed by all people of South Africa regardless of their race or social background. Therefore this is one of the best demonstrations of public consultation and democracy at play."
Mothapo says Parliament will defend its right to fulfil its constitutional mandate.
Afriforum Ernst Roests believes the report does not reflect the majority view of the people who took part in the public confutations.
The matter is expected to be heard at the Cape Town High Court early next week.
