Petrol, diesel price hikes announced as govt extends levy relief
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy on Tuesday announced the fuel price increases for June.
The price of 95-octane unleaded petrol will rise by R2.33 a litre, while 93-octane unleaded petrol will go up by R2.43 a litre.
Diesel prices will rise by R1.10 (0.05% sulphur) per litre and R1.07 (0.005% sulphur) per litre respectively, while illuminating paraffin will be R1.56 more expensive per litre
The hike, although steep, is not as much as expected after Treasury announced an extension to the temporary reduction in the fuel levy by a further two months.
The levy will be reduced by R1.50 for one more month whereafter it will be reduced to 75c in July.
Treasury says the relief will come to an end in August.
In a joint statement on Tuesday, Treasury and the Department of Mineral Resources said government will introduce further measures to help reduce the pressure on consumers.
“The DMRE will remove the demand side management levy of 10c per litre that has been applied to inland 95 ULP. After a review and consultation by the DMRE, it is proposed that the basic fuel price also be decreased by 3c per litre in the coming months.
“Government intends to continue with consultations and proposals to remove the price cap on 93 ULP, which will partially deregulate the market and introduce more competition to lower pump prices.”
