Phillip Saunders appointed SAA interim CEO

South African Airways (SAA) has appointed Philip Saunders as its new interim CEO.

The troubled airline has had two CEO’s resign in the space of a year.

Vuyani Jarana resigned last year June, at the height of the airline’s troubles, and acting CEO Zuks Ramasia left for early retirement in April.

The Department of Public Enterprises’ acting director-general Kgathatso Tlhakudi announced Saunders’ appointment on Tuesday.

“Government in the coming days will announce an interim board for the new SAA,” he said.

“But we are pleased to announce that we will have an interim CEO in the name of Phillip Saunders, who is a very credible airline executive.”

The new system will verify applicants' banking details in order to prevent fraud. UIF commissioner Teboho Maruping says payments resumed over the weekend and managed to disburse R372 million. Saunders has been lauded for his extensive experience in the airline industry.

SAA business rescue practitioners scheduled a creditors’ meeting on Tuesday to decide the fate of the troubled national carrier.

The creditors had the task of voting in favour or reject the revised rescue plan.
