[PICTURES] Blaze guts at least 500 homes in Alex

Johannesburg Emergency Services were still assessing the extent of the destruction following a fire in the township on Thursday afternoon.

No injuries or fatalities have been reported.

“There were blazes everywhere. We are still confirming with community members to check if their family members and neighbours are safe,” says spokesperson Nana Radebe.

According to Radebe, the number of shacks destroyed in the fire are expected to increase as firefighters were still battling to control the fires. 

“Three fire engines were deployed to the area.”
