Tshwane Emergency Medical Services (EMS) say it is not safe to be on the roads in Centurion on Monday as rain persists and the Hennops River is flooding.

Tshwane EMS' Charles Mabaso says they are receiving reports of people living in informal structures around the SuperSport Park area being trapped by flash floods.

"It is not a good day to be on the road," says Mabaso.  "Where possible, residents are advised to remain at home."

Mabaso maintains that it is unsafe to drive around Centurion for the time being.

"If there is nothing forcing a person to be out there, please avoid being out there," he says.

According to Mabaso, they are still trying to establish how many people are trapped, but emergency services are rushing to the area in numbers to assist those in need.

Earlier, he had noted that the Centurion Lake Hotel has flooded following almost a week of persistent rain.

Mabaso also warned that additional flooding in areas towards Mamelodi and Hamamndskraal could not be ruled out, and that flooding was also occurring in parts of Johannesburg.
