Pietermaritzburg tornado is ‘fake news’: SA Weather Service
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The South African Weather Service has dismissed reports of tornado in the Pietermaritzburg area of KwaZulu-Natal.
In the video, shared widely on social media, a huge dark cloud can be seen in the horison.
Weather forecaster Tokelo Chiloane says the video is fake.
“We are aware of the tornado video that made the rounds on social media, that apparently happened in Pietermaritzburg around 14:00. At this stage I can confirm that the video is not true, however there was heavy downpours that was experienced in that area.
“Just to make sure that we are not out of the loop, we actually confirmed with the local disaster management in Pietermaritzburg, and they confirmed that there was no tornado that was spotted.”
