Mosimane takes over from Belgian tactician Hugo Broos. His tasks include qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027, the Africa Nations League and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

This is Mosimane's second stint with the senior men's team, following his first spell between 2010 and 2012.

SAFA president Danny Jordaan briefed the media in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

“I have known Pitso for many years and have worked with him before. I look forward to renewing our partnership and continuing to work in the best interests of South African football and Bafana Bafana,” he said.

The 62-year-old's appointment comes on the back of Bafana's historic performance at the FIFA World Cup, where they qualified for the second round of the tournament for the first time.

Mosimane said he believes there is still more he can offer in South African football.

"I take this responsibility knowing that I still have something to give in football, especially in my country. I do so with many years of experience at the moment, but also with even deeper appreciation of what it means to lead Bafana Bafana," he told reporters.

Mosimane is one of South African football's longest-serving and most decorated coaches, having won multiple major trophies at home and abroad.

His coaching career includes being head coach at SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Al Ahly; he later moved to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Iran, where he continued his coaching career.
