Police ‘closing the net’ on Meyiwa murder investigation
Updated | By Sune du Toit
Detectives were ”closing the net” on suspects in the murder investigation of slain Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, provincial commissioner for detectives, Major General Vincent Leshabane said on Thursday.
”We are busy investigating and getting overwhelming evidence, we are closing the net but should also make sure whoever we arrest is the right suspect,” Leshabane told journalists in Johannesburg.
”We are getting good evidence…we are left with linking a suspect to the crime.”
Meyiwa was shot dead in October last year while visiting his girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo at her childhood home in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.
Police made several arrests, including Zanokuhle Mbatha, 25, whose case was thrown out of court due to lack of evidence. At least 12 other people arrested were also released as they could not be linked to the crime.
Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba said the Meyiwa investigation was not an easy case. Detectives were working around the clock to complete the case, he said.
”Criminal investigations differ and this is not an easy one. The investigation team is travelling between KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng working hard on this case, we want to assure the people of this province that detectives are committed and hard at work.”
