Police deployed to curb looting in flood-stricken KZN
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala has deployed police to curb incidents of looting in areas affected by floods in the province.
The move follows reports of people looting the shipping containers which had been washed out by the rain into the N2 highway.
The heavy rain has wreaked havoc in the province – damaging infrastructure and leaving scores of people homeless.
At least 60 people have died.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit several of the affected areas on Wednesday.
Zikalala says police will remain on high alert.
“Clearly there are those elements who always when there is problem want to take advantage and do their own thing. The looting that happened in Umlazi area, we condemn it in the strongest terms.
“Police were part of those who were trying to save those communities who were affected by the storm. But right now we have deployed police all over, to ensure that such things do not occur.
“We will not allow what is a tragic development in our province to be taken advantage of by criminals. We call on all law enforcement agencies to ensure that all property is protected from criminality and that law and order is maintained during this period.”
