Police in Gauteng have arrested two suspects for possession of explosives used during illegal mining.
The two were arrested during a police patrol in the Zamimpilo informal settlement in Langlaagte, south of Johannesburg, on Wednesday.
Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubele says the explosives were discovered during a search for illegal cigarettes.
"The K9 was summoned and on arrival confirmed that the contents of the plastic bag were indeed explosives: 20 sticks of power gel, 10 connector capped fuses, 10 metres of ignitor cord.”
He says more explosives were discovered in the suspect's home where a woman was also arrested.
They are both set to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
The man is expected to facing an additional charge after he attempted to bribe one of the police officers.

"Police have previously disrupted illegal mining activities in the Langlaagte area as such activities have been found to contribute to serious and violent crimes such as murder,” says Gauteng police commissioner Elias Mawela.
“The law enforcement agencies in Gauteng will continue with such patrols and integrated disruptive operations in areas known to be problematic.”
