Police recover car of deceased constables at Hennops River
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Police have confirmed that the white VW Polo retrieved from the Hennops River in Centurion belonged to the three Free State police officers who died earlier this week.
Constables Cebekhulu Linda, Keamogetswe Buys and Boipelo Senoge went missing after travelling from Bloemfontein to their deployment area in Limpopo last week.
Their bodies were retrieved from the river on Tuesday.
Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said a thorough investigation will now be conducted.
"Forensics are going to go through the car thoroughly. I am saying it looks like it capsized first. I am not an expert, but that is what I can see.
"Let’s allow the investigation to proceed. We cannot rule out anything, but we also cannot conclusively say this is what has happened," Maselmoa said.
A case of defeating the ends of justice has, meanwhile, been registered after a social media user falsely claimed to have spotted the vehicle of the three deceased constables in Cape Town.
On Thursday, divers retrieved - from the Hennops River in Centurion - the wreckage of what was confirmed as the white VW Polo that constables were driving.
"An individual in Cape Town claims he saw this particular vehicle in the area. We have registered a case of defeating the ends of justice. We are searching for this particular person because he is misleading investigations," National Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe added.
